Chapter Fourteen

Fridays were always busy days at Marysburg Music. For a lot of folks, it was payday, which meant they had disposable income to spend on music. For the college students, it was the day to kick off the weekend festivities with new party music, especially since this was Ball State’s Homecoming weekend.

Since Izzy and Peter were seniors at Marysburg High School, a sizable portion of the teen set had started hanging out at the store before going to the football game or other activities.

In short, the little record store that Eddie and Darcy had nursed through infancy had grown up into something much grander than she could imagine back in the day.

Marysburg Music had become cool. In fact, it was one of the places in town to see and be seen. And not just among music lovers. People with all kinds of interests came through the store’s front door, often with big smiles and open wallets.

Of course, it didn’t hurt that a local celebrity worked there.

“How many people have asked to take selfies with you today?” Charlotte gave Darcy the side eye after she handed a customer their purchase and told them to come back any time.

“I don’t know. Half a dozen, maybe. It’s Ball State’s Homecoming weekend. A lot of people are in town for the first time in a while. You’re not complaining about how busy we are, are you?”

“No way.” She shook her head. “Brisk sales are good for my job security. I just worry you’re going to start putting the pictures of yourself and big shots on the wall of the office.”

“Or worse, on the walls out here.” Izzy exchanged a high five with Charlotte as she handed a sale to Darcy to be rung up. “Can’t have the big boss getting a big head.”

“Are you a celebrity?” The customer, a heavyset man with thinning hair and glasses, reached for his front pocket. The typical place for a dad or grandpa to keep his phone.

Darcy smiled and shook her head. “No.”

“That’s a lie,” Charlotte said. “She was a drummer in an influential punk band, and singlehandedly apprehended a murderer here in town last spring.

With cheeks getting as hot as the burners on her gas stove at home, Darcy forced a laugh. “I love my co-worker here, but she likes to exaggerate.”

“It’s not an exaggeration.” Liam came up beside the customer. He pointed to his phone screen. “Here you go, my man. Check out this news report about her.”

The customer’s eyes grew wide as he read the article. “Wow. My granddaughter’s a sophomore at Ball State. I remember her parents talking about this. For a while, they were worried about her.”

“She’s got nothing to worry about.” Liam pocketed his phone. “With people like Darcy here, the area is as safe as any place in America.”

“Um.” The man’s Adam’s apple bobbed up and down. “I heard there was another murder around here. Are you sure about that?”

Darcy cleared her throat. “The police are working diligently on the case.
